Larry J Sargent Sr, 85, of Lake Charles, passed away peacefully on Tuesday March 4, 2025 with his family at his side.
Larry was born to Densel and Fedora Whittekind Sargent in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. While he was still young, his family was transferred to Lake Charles and then to New Orleans, where he met the love of his life, Gail.
When he was 19, Larry proudly joined the United States Navy. He faithfully served from Nov 12, 1958 until his honorable discharge Nov 11, 1964. While serving, he achieved rank of 2nd Class Torpedoman. He was assigned to the USS Nereus which was classified as a AS-17 sub tender for 3 1/2 years. His active duty was extended for 3 weeks at time of discharge due to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Upon his return, he spent two years in the Naval Reserves. He then went on to work for Halliburton. Once he retired, he moved to Bullhead City, Arizona where he worked at the Golden Nugget. Upon their return to Lake Charles, he worked as a security officer at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital (LCMH) and at the LCMH Gauthier campus until he actually retired at the age of 80.
In 1960, he married his best friend, one and only and love of his life. This union lasted almost 65 years until Gail passed away, just six days before him.
Larry was a very creative man who could do and build almost anything. It was this spirit that made things fun for his kids growing up. He instilled a sense of pride in a job well done to all his children and his smile and quick wit warmed everyone’s heart.
He is preceded in death, by 6 days, his beloved wife Gail Strain Sargent; parents; a brother, Joseph Sargent. Those left to honor him are his children, Larry Sargent Jr (Belinda), Dody Gleason (Damon), Tammy Choates (Ben), Penny Cannon (William), 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, sister, Bonnie Cornelius, as well as a clowder of grandcats and pack of grand dogs.
The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses and entire staff of Harbor Hospice of Lake Charles for the amazing professional and compassionate care shown to the entire family in Mr. Larry and Ms. Gail’s final days.
A joint, private graveside celebration to honor both Larry and Gail will be held at the VA cemetery in Jennings at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any veterans charity or charity of the donor’s choice.
